"Among semetic religions, only christianity considers marriage purely a sacrament. Otherwise in Judaic and Islamic teachings, it is legal contract. So "Mehr" (مہر) of one of the prerequistes of marriage. A large number of Quranic injunctions and sayings of Hazrat Mohammad (ﷺ) reveal that payment of "Mehr" from the groom is a mark of respect to the wife. No one is exempt from this mandatory payment. Some anthropologists wrongfully mentioned "mehr" as bride wealth to the kin of bride from the kin of groom. It is sole property of the wife. This paper shows the similarities as well as differences between Judaic and Islamic teachings regarding "mehr". It also analyses the behaviour of the followers of aforesaid religions towards acceptance or negation of "mehr" and its impacts upon familial life."
